A significant supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is Genya Shinazugawa. He is the younger brother of the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and a member of the Demon Slayer Corps.

Appearance

Genya made his first appearance during the Final Selection as a youthful, petite man with big, downward-slanting eyes. He appeared permanently angry because of the persistent furrow in the area where his eyebrows should have been. Only a tiny knot of untidy black hair on the top of his head is left to grow out of his buzz-cut hairstyle. His right cheekbone, from his ear to the bridge of his nose, was covered with a big, jagged scar.

Genya is seen on his first appearance sporting a purple, sleeveless yukata over a straightforward, long-sleeved black shirt.

When seen again at the Butterfly Mansion later, Genya had developed a considerably more ferocious visage and had grown to about six feet tall. Additionally, he has significantly longer hair, more like a mohawk, and is visible around his neck. It should be mentioned that he also developed more muscle and numerous new scars all over his body.

He gets brilliant yellow tips in his hair after the Swordsmith Village arc. His attire changed to a dark olive-green Demon Slayer suit after he attained the title. Still, he continued to wear his previous purple yukata underneath.

Breathing Style

Back Stories

During Tanjiro’s reign, Sanemi Shinazugawa serves as the Wind Hashira. In reality, he’s one of the most powerful figures in Kimetsu no Yaiba who consistently manages to make life difficult for Upper Ranks demons.

Genya and Sanemi share a tight bond because they are brothers. Genya used to accuse Sanemi of killing their parents and siblings after demons struck and killed their family. And as a result, they started fighting.But due to Sanemi, Genya subsequently came to regret his decision and joined the Demon Slayer Corps. However, Sanemi first disapproved of Genya. Even yet, Sanemi would eventually come to accept Genya’s return.

Personality

Genya comes out as an initially obnoxious and angry person, a “lone wolf” who refused assistance from others and showed little interest in being friendly or polite. He grabbed Kanata Ubuyashiki by the hair and yelled at her during the Final Selection. His short fuse and brazen demeanor strongly reflect his older brother, Sanemi.
He fought alongside Tanjiro Kamado, Mitsuri Kanroji, and Nezuko Kamado against Upper Rank Demon Hantengu, where he grew more receptive to cooperation. After some time, he discovered how to be friendlier and less rude to other people, especially Tanjiro and his buddies.

He felt insecure as a result of Sanemi’s rejection of Genya because he realized how inferior he was to his friends. Nevertheless, he made every effort to aid his buddies, even when doing so left him badly maimed. He didn’t have any animosity toward his brother despite his stern corrections; Tanjiro and later Sanemi himself confirmed this.

Power&Abilities

Demonic Transformation: Genya could momentarily acquire demonic traits by ingesting the living flesh of a demon. He might get regeneration and physical strength equivalent to one, depending on his strength. Genya is capable of briefly defeating Aizetsu in this form.

Flesh Gun: Genya demonstrated the ability to separate his cells and combine them with his weapon, which resembled Kokushibo’s sword in that it had several eyeballs on top of the barrel and muzzle. This feature likely increased the weapon’s accuracy and power.

Gyomei Himejima taught him the technique of repetitive action to help him make up for his inability to use breathing styles naturally and effectively. Genya repeats a series of sentences or phrases as part of this technique, which helps him maintain proper attention, keep his mind free of distractions, and block out the pain. When Genya was mortally wounded while battling Hantengu’s Clone Aizetsu, he employed this technique to concentrate on himself and, to some extent, mimic the effects of Total Concentration Breathing. Genya repeats a set of prayers from the Amida Sutra to help him concentrate and steel his mind.

Expert Marksman: Genya has a high level of proficiency with his double-barreled shotgun and has successfully used it in combat against both Upper Rank Four and One.

Expert Swordsman: Genya’s primary weapon before he decided to use a shotgun was a short Nichirin Katana, and it was hinted that he was at least moderately skilled in utilizing it.

Blood Demon Art

During the battle with Upper Rank One, Genya had seemingly evolved his own Blood Demon Art after consuming the flesh and cells of at least two Upper Ranks (Kokushibo and Hantengu). Genya’s Blood Demon Art was made to fight other demons and harm them, the same as Nezuko’s.

Due to eating the cells of Upper Rank One and Upper Rank Four, Genya had developed a special technique where he combined his demon-transformed cells with his sun steel bullets and gun, allowing him to freely control the direction and velocity of the bullets when fired. This was demonstrated when his shots easily maneuvered around Kokushibo’s sword and directly buried themselves into his femur. The bullets have the ability to instantly transform into a massive tree once within their victim, much like the tree creatures of Upper Rank Four’s Zohakuten form, which they can then encircle and wrap around their intended target to render them paralyzed.

Blood Roots: Genya may modify his implanted Flesh Bullets further by causing them to penetrate their target and absorb the blood of the demonic creatures living there, stopping them from using their own Blood Demon Arts.

Weapon Used

Nichirin Shotgun: Genya carries a western double-barreled shotgun that he employs skillfully in close-quarters and long-range warfare. He kills demons without a weapon thanks to using bullets made of scarlet ore and scarlet crimson iron sand.

Nichirin Wakizashi: Genya also carries a shorter Nichirin Sword that appears to be a wakizashi and has two hollow ovals that overlap its center. The handguard is a drab brown color.
